Thirst is a natural built in safe guard by God that sends an alarm to the brain to inform us that we are on the brink of dehydration and in desperate need of water. Without water the body will shut down and death will occur in a very short amount of time. Simply put, water is necessary to sustain the life and health of our bodies. God uses His creation of thirst in our physical bodies to teach us a more important lesson about spiritual thirst.

Revelation 21:6 “And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.”

Notice that the invitation is to those who thirst. This is to desire God. A longing for God and one so strong that nothing else will do. Secondly, the offer is free. Not cheap but free. The purchase was made with the life of the Lamb of God! Thirdly, the offer is life giving. This is a promise of salvation and abundant life forever.

What about the invitation of Christ here to freely give the water of life to those who thirst? On the heels of verses that reveal the end of all unrighteousness and the ushering in of all things new we find this invitation. Jesus is making an offer of abundant life to those who are thirsty for Him. The only requirement for the water of life, eternal life, is thirst. However too often we find ourselves drinking in the world’s offerings in an attempt to satisfy our soul. The world’s beverages lead some to substance abuse, broken relationships, and some to broken lifestyles all in hopes to find that one thing that would quench the deep longing we feel but don’t recognize. Regardless of the world’s beverage choice you find yourself empty and void. The problem is that we don’t recognize that our need and desire is Jesus! Jesus is not of this world; therefore your desire for Him can’t be satisfied by the things of this world. You must to come to Christ seeking to find forgiveness of sin and the abundant life through the restored relationship with God that Jesus died and rose for you to have. Sex, drugs, money, fame . . .you name it will never cut it. These are temporary and you have an eternal need. God is eternal and only through God will you find the soul quenching, life giving water that will satisfy you. I pray that you have a desire for God and if you don’t that God would make you aware of your need to be thirsty for Him.

Are you thirsty? Really thirsty? Like deer panting for water, Psalm 42, type thirsty? Then come to Jesus and let your soul be satisfied. Simply put. Admit that you are sinful and that you need a savior. Believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that Jesus died on the cross for your sin and was raised for your life. Confess Jesus as your Lord forever.

For the original recipients of this letter, these texts are very encouraging. It reminded them that God is present to help them and to provide for them during terrible times. As they endured these hardships, their thirst for God would increase and Jesus reminds them that He will satisfy them always. For the church today the meaning is the same. The world is a hard and difficult place. But Jesus is our Lord and has provided for us a spring of living water. Believer do not partake of the world’s offering but rather drink in Christ. Read His word and be blessed by all His promises. Jesus has never failed you nor will He ever. Let me remind you that the abundant life is to be experienced right now and forevermore. Take heart believer. We have a constant flowing fountain to satisfy our longings, regardless of the circumstances,  through the presence of God in our lives.

Revelation 22:17 “ And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.”
