Revelation 7:2, 9:4 “The Sealed of God”

Our text makes us aware that Christ will fully redeem the church and fully judge unrighteousness. What a boost of confidence it must have been for the church to receive this Revelation! The early church needed to know that Jesus Christ was going to fulfill all that He spoke of. The church endured severe persecution suffered at the hands of Rome. It must have seemed unjust to suffer at the hands of the unrighteous. Maybe they questioned the full redemption promised by Christ? Encouragement was needed and God provided the much needed encouragement with His Word.  Revelation 7:2, 9:4 is just the message needed for the church then and now!  God has sealed those that belong to Him and will bring judgment against our adversaries.

God seals the believer with His presence for possession, protection, and purpose. The Holy Spirit is the seal that God has placed on each and every believer (Eph.1:13-14). The presence of God in the life of the forgiven sinner marks the believer as God’s possession. As God’s possession we have our testimony authenticated because we have been marked by God’s presence evidenced by the fruit of the Spirit  (Gal.5:22-25). As His possession we have been made new (2Cor.5:17) and are being made like Christ (Romans 8:28-30). Most of all we are His possession. You belong to Him!

What God takes possession of He does not lose, but He keeps by Divine protection (John 10:27-30). Struggles with sin, self, and waves of temptations from the adversary pose no threat to the redemptive work of God in Christ. At times the centrifugal force of life may cause you to let go of God but rest assured believer that Christ has apprehended you. You need not to worry about holding on during hardships. Christ will never let you go. We do not need to worry about the surety of our salvation. Jesus Christ defeated sin, death, and Satan (1 Cor.15:55). As a believer you are protected by an omnipotent God that will not allow anything to separate you from Him. All believers have the confidence of a full and complete redemption in Christ. Our text tells us that God seals the redeemed and protects them from His judgment on ungodliness to come. God has taken possession of the church and every believer in order to protect you from the just wrath to come. In His grace you were not saved for wrath . . . you were saved from it.

What God takes possession of receives His protection for the purpose of His glorification. This truth is made very clear in Paul’s letter to the believers in Ephesus. “. . . you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” (Eph.1:13-14)  Your salvation is ultimately about the glorification of God. God will receive glory for redeeming sinners. Therefore, your redemption will be sealed by God. The glory of God rest on the full redemption of the church. Therefore, the church will be redeemed.
